Central Server Works is pleased to present our fifth exhibition:

Maxwell Sykes

Landmarks

Opening November 6, 2022, at CSW Horner with a reception for the artist from 5- 8 PM.

The exhibition features paintings and works on paper created between 2020 and 2022 by the artist. The show is the first of a two-part presentation with the artist that the gallery will stage in the fall of 2022.

Sykes is a Los Angeles based artist whose work reflects his travels throughout the city. Devoting a considerable amount of his studio practice to the idea of being an observer, Sykes utilizes a keen sense of place and an evolving mastery of his painting practice to pay homage to what he calls “landmarks” throughout the city.

The places depicted in his work are familiar: one of the most widely advertised taco shops in the city, one of the last remaining drive-in dairies in the city, and the first all-nude strip club on the Sunset Strip, still in operation since the 1960s, all make up only some of the Landmarks Sykes has used his painting practice to pay homage too.

The exhibition also works to place the artist’s work in conversation with other artists who have tracked the evolution of the city over time. The difference for Sykes is his ability to translate these spaces outside of any specific time period as he works not only to show these places as they currently stand but also pulls from his experience viewing them over time.
