Monica Berger and Sofia Heftersmith - Flesh World Magazine
Flesh World is an offset-printed, plastic-wrapped magazine created by Monica Berger and Sofia Heftersmith in conjunction with their two-person exhibition of the same title at Central Server Works. Taking its name from the exhibition—and created by the artists as a kind of homage and reclamation of the notorious classifieds rag—the project reimagines their works not through precise archive, but more in tune with atmosphere: a speculative site where the body is fragmented, restaged, and rendered strange.
Through works on paper and digital drawings that reflect the artists’ distinct approaches to painting and collage, the publication extends the exhibition’s interrogation of desire, artifice, and the violent aesthetics of femininity. Berger’s heavy and immersive worlds on surface and Heftersmith’s almost sculptural compositions of the body collide on the page, riffing on shared reference points—from pulp erotica and tabloid kitsch to surrealist figuration—without collapsing into nostalgia.
Equal parts magazine, artwork, and object, Flesh World offers a messy, seductive counter-narrative to the polished image. Originally rejected by multiple printers for its explicit content, the magazine was ultimately produced at a renegade press in the San Fernando Valley—historic home of the adult publishing industry—further rooting the project in the logic of resistance and reappropriation.
